The heritization of historic naval shipyards in Europe

Chapter 11 provided a general framework for interpreting processes of heritization in general, and a first application to the complex processes of the Venice Arsenal, from its earliest history to the (unfinished and somehow contradictory) re-uses proposed over the past decades for deindustrialization and partial demilitarization. Chapter 12 provided a preliminary overview of historic naval shipyards (HNS) in Europe, with important observations on patterns of change, mainly from the point of view of the architectural transformations affecting them. Following the same path, this chapter provides the basis of a comparative research agenda for HNS, in an attempt at extending the framework to industrial heritage in general. First, we make the case for comparative research with a focus on managing and organizing. Next, we define the focus of the research and discuss sample selection, data collection and analysis. Finally, we outline the expected impacts of this research agenda
