To reflect on Brazil is to grapple with a paradox: a Latin American country born of a distinct colonial experience, a monarchy while republics were springing up all around it, which for a long time looked to Europe rather than to its own subcontinent. This volume traces the stages of this ambiguity, weaving together historical processes and national idiosyncrasies, cultural codes, and deep-seated contradictions—such as the covert racism that permeates society. From the 19th-century independence movements to the postwar era, from regional integration projects to the intellectual experiences of exile, right up to recent political polarizations. What emerges is a constantly evolving plurality—a multifaceted Brazil whose belonging to Latin America appears to be a political, symbolic, and imaginary construct.
