Diversity and difference are central concepts in contemporary pedagogical discourse, particularly within inclusive and special education, yet their meanings are often overlapping and conceptually ambiguous. This chapter examines their semantic, etymological and pedagogical foundations in order to clarify their distinctive meanings and explore their implications for inclusive education. Moving from an analysis of their linguistic roots, the discussion highlights how diversity historically evokes divergence from an assumed norm, whereas difference conveys a more relational and dynamic movement towards otherness. These meanings are subsequently examined through the contributions of Giovanni Maria Bertin, Andrea Canevaro, Roberta Caldin and Fiorino Tessaro. Bertin conceptualises difference as a dynamic and transformative principle, grounded in existential planning and openness to possibility; Canevaro understands diversity as a universal condition inherent in human existence, challenging dichotomies between normality and abnormality; Caldin distinguishes diversity as a given bio-psycho-social condition from difference as a process through which individuals can actively shape meaningful life projects; and Tessaro further emphasises diversity as an irreducible dimension of human uniqueness, whose recognition calls for the overcoming of prejudice and normative categorisation. Drawing these perspectives together, the chapter argues that diversity and difference should neither be treated as synonyms nor conceived as opposing categories. Rather, they constitute complementary pedagogical horizons: diversity represents the condition from which educational processes begin, while difference expresses the transformative and future-oriented possibilities through which individuals can construct their identities and life projects. From this perspective, inclusive education is called not merely to accommodate diversity, but to create educational and social conditions in which individual differences can become resources for participation, personal development and the construction of inclusive plurality.

Abstract
From this perspective, inclusive education is called not merely to accommodate diversity, but to create educational and social conditions in which individual differences can become resources for participation, personal development and the construction of inclusive plurality.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
