Una storia dalla parte del dissenso: Angelo Clareno storiografo

Angelo Clareno’s name is completely missing from studies on medieval historiography. This absence is surprising. The historical period in which Angelo wrote his Chronicae (a history of the Franciscan movement developed over more than a century) is a crucial one for the building of the historiography in the Middle Ages. Bernard Guenée’s studies, enhanced by recent research groups working on digitalized corpora of texts, have demonstrated how between the 13th and 14th century various sub-genres were born and established, with a specific distinction among annalistic, chronological, and historical approaches; on the other hand, in the municipal or, better, in the sphere of the artes dictandi, there is a professionalization of historical knowledge, with a clarification of the role of the auctor. This contribution wants to insert Clareno’s Chronicae in the wider landscape of medieval historiography, identifying its genre, its audience and its relationship with prophecy.
