Cecilio Acosta's philosophy of law for a future Venezuela

This presentation explores the legal and political thought of Cecilio Acosta (1818–1881), one of nineteenth-century Venezuela’s most influential intellectuals, and examines its potential relevance to the country’s future. Acosta’s philosophy of law is grounded in a linear conception of history, understood as a process of transformation in which crises and conflicts may become stages of social regeneration and expanding human freedom. Within this framework, law and constitutions are necessarily imperfectible and must emerge from the historical development and needs of living societies. The rule of law, international law, and commercial law were, for Acosta, essential instruments for overcoming political instability and fostering national development. His project was complemented by a philosophy of “unlimited education,” conceived as a peaceful and systematic means of social transformation. The presentation argues that historical awareness, the rule of law, and universal education remain central elements of Acosta’s enduring vision for a modern and prosperous Venezuela.
