This chapter examines the often-overlooked role of philosophical reflection in contemplative traditions and in their contemporary psychological interpretation. It argues that contemplative practices cannot be fully understood apart from the conceptual frameworks concerning mind, self, knowledge, and reality in which they are embedded. Particular attention is given to Buddhist traditions and to the risks of reducing meditation to a decontextualized psychological technique.
