Eighteen painted mortar fragments from the Lio Piccolo Villa are investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to identify the pigments employed in the decorations. The colour palette identified through analysis consists of “austeri” pigments applied over a carbonate-based layer, in some cases supplemented with gypsum. Iron oxides were used for red, pink, and brown tones; green earths for green; and Egyptian blue for blue.
