Abstract

The Greek commentators believe that the principal subject of Book V of the Nicomachean Ethics is particular justice, rather than all the other forms of justice, which are mentioned only by way of comparison and for the sake of completeness. The decision to focus attention on particular justice and to make its study the subject of the book has the effect of facilitating a unified interpretation of Book V, since its various sections will then appear merely as additions to the central part: the examination of this species of justice, which is developed in Chapters 4–7 and 9.
