paper examines the position of Bulgarian within the typological framework of the Standard Average European (SAE) linguistic area, as defined by Haspelmath (2001), and its relation to both Slavic and Balkan linguistic traditions. While Bulgarian shares a number of core SAE features, it also diverges in key areas due to its dual heritage: genetically Slavic and areally Balkan. Through a comparative analysis of morphosyntactic features known as “Europeanisms” and “Balkanisms”, the paper demonstrates that Bulgarian exhibits a layered linguistic structure shaped by internal developments, language contact, and universal tendencies. The discussion highlights the complex interplay of genealogical inheritance, contact-induced change, and typological convergence, positioning Bulgarian as a peripheral yet telling member of the European linguistic space.

Abstract
paper examines the position of Bulgarian within the typological framework of the Standard Average European (SAE) linguistic area, as defined by Haspelmath (2001), and its relation to both Slavic and Balkan linguistic traditions. The discussion highlights the complex interplay of genealogical inheritance, contact-induced change, and typological convergence, positioning Bulgarian as a peripheral yet telling member of the European linguistic space.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
