Since 2021, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, in collaboration with the University of Padua, has been carrying out a project studying the Venetian lagoon landscape during the Roman period through underwater research. The activities consist of geophysical investigations, photogrammetric documentation, and underwater excavations. The most important site currently under investigation is located at Lio Piccolo, where a brick and wood holding tank used to keep oysters alive has been excavated. The northern lagoon features infrastructure designed to facilitate navigation toward the harbor of Altinum and prestigious villas.
