This paper investigates the visual representation of the Holocaust in Czech history text-books (Grade 9) published between 1947 and 2022, focusing on possible differences and re-semblances between the visual codes employed, for the same purpose, in the communist and post-communist periods. Special attention is paid to the issue of the Holocaust in the context of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The problematic provenance of most of these images, which can be traced back to the “Nazi gaze” on their crimes, along with the frequent lack of reference to their sources, raises numerous questions about the supposed educational function of Holocaust photographs in school textbooks.
