The article proposes to see the conversion to Catholicism of the early modern Kingdom of Kongo as a case of African confessionalization. In doing so, it analyzes the internal dynamics of the Kongolese elites and understands their politics of Church building as another facet of the factional struggle within the African kingdom. It finally explains how the Kongolese kings' loyalty to the Papacy contributed to consolidating the political position of the Kingdom towards the European states that were striving to take control of Kongolese trade.
