Between the end of the 1570s and the second decade of the following century, the church of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli underwent a period of extraordinary artistic renovation that earned it the title of templum aureum: in addition to the paintings dedicated to the Life of st. Nicolas by Leonardo Corona and Francesco Montemezzano, that adorn the ceiling, the nave was decorated with a cycle of Stories from the Life and Passion of Christ by Alvise del Friso and his workshop and Jacopo Palma il Giovane. The essay reconstructs the biographical and cultural profile, ecclesiastical career and network of one of the protagonists of this great renovation, about whom nothing was known before: the parish priest Salomon Lando (c. 1529-1612). The analysis of pastoral visits, the church payment register and a previously unpublished Memoriale also shed light on the pictorial cycle that adorns the nave, as well as hypothesising one of its possible functions, to be related to the practice of the Quarantore and the parish’s School of Christian Doctrine.

Abstract
1529-1612). The analysis of pastoral visits, the church payment register and a previously unpublished Memoriale also shed light on the pictorial cycle that adorns the nave, as well as hypothesising one of its possible functions, to be related to the practice of the Quarantore and the parish’s School of Christian Doctrine.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
