The article presents the controversy that arose in the late sixth century around a Syriac convert from Miaphysitis to Chalcedonianism, Probus. It displays for the first time the complete range of available sources documenting the controversy, and illustrates the stakes of Probus' attack against the Miaphysites, which paradoxically accused them of being too divisive in their Christology. It further explains why and how Probus' arguments remained for centuries a cause of disquiet for Syriac Miaphysites, who never ceased to confront his accusations. In an appendix, the article provides and edition and translation of two unedited 9th-century Syriac sources on the controversy.
