The availability of building materials in the Adriatic area during the early modern period inevitably shaped the architectural cultures of the various regions, leading either to largely self-sufficient (autarkic) economies or, conversely, to systems heavily dependent on imports. It also determined the principal dichotomy within Adriatic building cultures between the predominant use of stone or brick in wall structures. Finally, timber—widely used as a secondary construction material—offers further insights into trade networks. The study of these phenomena is based primarily on the direct analysis of materials in historic architecture and on archival research, despite the limitations and occasional discrepancies in results that may arise from these approaches.

Abstract
The availability of building materials in the Adriatic area during the early modern period inevitably shaped the architectural cultures of the various regions, leading either to largely self-sufficient (autarkic) economies or, conversely, to systems heavily dependent on imports. It also determined the principal dichotomy within Adriatic building cultures between the predominant use of stone or brick in wall structures. Finally, timber—widely used as a secondary construction material—offers further insights into trade networks. The study of these phenomena is based primarily on the direct analysis of materials in historic architecture and on archival research, despite the limitations and occasional discrepancies in results that may arise from these approaches.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
