This volume presents the findings of several years’ research into the work of Pietro Zampetti, municipal director of Fine Arts in Venice from 1953 to 1970. The study offers a historical-critical review of the choices made by the scholar, based on a meticulous examination of private archives, most of which are now held at the Ateneo Veneto in Venice, an institution of which Pietro Zampetti became President in later years. Beginning with a re-examination of the Biennales of Ancient Art, from the first dedicated to Lorenzo Lotto in 1953 to the last one he curated in 1969, the study presents the curatorial choices, the methodology, and the contributions made to the exhibitions by Carlo Scarpa, Egle Renata Trincanato, Franco Albini, Franca Helg and Umberto Franzoi, the international critical reception and the historical and artistic legacy of the exhibitions. The work concludes with a detailed examination of the edition of the “Libro di spese diverse”, published by Olschki in 1969 (Fondazione Giorgio Cini - Civiltà veneziana. Fonti e testi. Serie I, 6).
