This paper offers a syntactic analysis of the nineteenth‐century translation of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in the Germanic variety Mòcheno spoken in the Fersina valley in Trentino, showing that the syntax of the text is strikingly close, though not identical, to that of present‐day varieties. This result, which is in line with the analyses of the phonological and morphological levels, speaks in favour of the idea that the specific features of Mòcheno syntax have been in place for a long time and are not the result of recent contact with Romance, but rather conservative features of older Germanic and Old Italian varieties.

Abstract

This paper offers a syntactic analysis of the nineteenth‐century translation of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in the Germanic variety Mòcheno spoken in the Fersina valley in Trentino, showing that the syntax of the text is strikingly close, though not identical, to that of present‐day varieties. This result, which is in line with the analyses of the phonological and morphological levels, speaks in favour of the idea that the specific features of Mòcheno syntax have been in place for a long time and are not the result of recent contact with Romance, but rather conservative features of older Germanic and Old Italian varieties.
