This article presents the results of an interdisciplinary investigation aimed at clarifying the earliest phases of occupation at the site of the former Fondo Sandrigo, situated on the eastern bank of Aquileia’s river port. Evidence for these initial phases survives primarily in the form of robbing trenches and a limited assemblage of fragmentary materials, preserved as residual finds within stratigraphic units that post-date their original context of use. The former Fondo Sandrigo offers an exemplary case study in the “interdisciplinary analysis of fragments.” Indeed, despite considerable stratigraphic complexity, the incomplete preservation of architectural features, and the high degree of data fragmentation, the integrated analytical framework adopted here has made it possible to reconstruct the earliest stages of a multifaceted settlement sequence. This outcome underscores the potential of combining excavation data with artefactual analysis to recover segments of archaeological narratives that would otherwise remain inaccessible, while also demonstrating how heterogeneous fragments and datasets can be brought into productive dialogue within a unified interpretative model.
