This study explores the acquisition of clitic constructions in monolingual Bulgarian children by integrating experimental findings with longitudinal data from the LabLing corpus. The analysis reveals early and stable clitic realization, accurate prosodic–syntactic alignment, and limited omission rates best explained by processing constraints and interface factors rather than syntactic immaturity. Bulgarian offers a particularly illuminating context for understanding the interaction of syntax, prosody, and discourse in early acquisition.

Abstract

This study explores the acquisition of clitic constructions in monolingual Bulgarian children by integrating experimental findings with longitudinal data from the LabLing corpus. The analysis reveals early and stable clitic realization, accurate prosodic–syntactic alignment, and limited omission rates best explained by processing constraints and interface factors rather than syntactic immaturity. Bulgarian offers a particularly illuminating context for understanding the interaction of syntax, prosody, and discourse in early acquisition.
