Since the earliest investigations of the urbs, scholars have proposed a port character for Altinum. Direct evidence of port facilities and spatial organisation became available in later research stages, and it remains fragmentary. The discovery in 2009 of the harbour’s basin at Valle Rossa enabled a targeted investigation of the Altinum port system carried out by the Universities of Venice and Padua. The research included investigations into both lagoon and urban contexts, on which a doctoral thesis is focusing. This paper presents the current state of research and the main results obtained to date within these projects
