The chapter reflects on the role and responsibilities of cultural heritage research in addressing major contemporary challenges, particularly climate change and social transformation. Drawing on the experience of the CHANGES – NextGen Heritage working tables, it critically examines traditional models of knowledge production and the relationship between research, heritage, and society. The “challenge” discussed lies in rethinking researchers as active participants in processes of participation, governance, and meaning-making, rather than as detached experts. Emphasising interdisciplinary, collaborative, and reflexive approaches, the chapter conceives cultural heritage not as a static object of preservation, but as a dynamic and shared process that can contribute to social, cultural, and environmental sustainability.
