The article examines the linguistic affinities between the Veneti and the Romans, focusing in particular on whether these affinities stem from common heritage, long-term convergence, or cultural and linguistic Romanisation. Following a general methodological framework, the discussion first considers the formal and semantic affinities between the institutional Venetic terms (plural) loudero- «sons and daughters», loudera- «Daughter (?)», vottsom «votive (?)», votstavo «votive (?) / one who formulates a vow (?)» and their Latin counterparts (līberī «sons and daughters»; uōtum «vow»). It then turns to the case of boundary cippi from urban areas, which reveal both the infiltration of Roman cultural and linguistic elements during the Venetic phase and the persistence of local traditions even after incorporation into the Roman state.
