It is difficult to delineate a comprehensive account of the relationship between philosophy and literature, so ancient, profound, and complex is their interrelation. This is not merely a matter of proximity, but rather of an intricate intertwining that involves the very modalities through which the human being confers meaning upon the world and upon existence itself. Philosophy interrogates this meaning through the concept and logical argumentation; literature, by contrast, does so through narrative, symbol, and image. Yet, in numerous instances, the boundaries between these two domains prove to be porous and permeable: philosophy assumes narrative forms, while literature is imbued with existential and metaphysical reflection, thereby giving rise to a shared terrain of inquiry and interpretation. It is precisely here that philosophy and literature encounter one another and engage in a dialogue of thought, not as discrete disciplines, but as complementary modalities of interrogating the human condition. Ideally and structurally, the present issue of Thaumazein unfolds in two parts. The first part examines works situated «between» these two spheres: literary texts that are, in their very constitution, philosophical. The second part shifts the focus towards a perspective more explicitly philosophical –phenomenological, hermeneutical, aesthetic, religious – to explore the fertile hybridisation between literature and philosophy.
