CHIt: a Web Application for the Valorization of the Italian Cultural Heritage with a Focus on Germanic Peoples in Italy

The goal of this doctoral project was the development of a client-side web application for the valorization and fruition of the Italian cultural heritage. The app, named CHIt (Cultural Heritage of Italy), was developed using the Muruca framework, which follows a three-layer architecture: backend, middleware, and frontend. The app integrates the visualization software EVT for viewing XML files and uses Pundit, a browser extension for text annotation. CHIt contains resources related to Italy's cultural heritage that are already available online but scattered across multiple websites, therefore not homogeneous. The goal is to provide users with simplified access to these digital objects, bringing them together on a single platform and ensuring their homogeneity and interoperability by formatting metadata according to internationally recognized standards (e.g., DCMI and CIDOC). Additionally, the simplicity of the interface makes it suitable for various types of users, who can use CHIt in different ways according to their needs. The resources come from platforms with different objectives and contexts, meaning the methods for retrieving the resources varied. The main goal was reuse, and to adhere to this principle, resources are retrieved via APIs or SPARQL queries. However, some metadata has been manually entered into the backend.

Lo scopo di questo progetto dottorale è stato lo sviluppo di un’applicazione web lato client per la valorizzazione e la fruizione del patrimonio culturale italiano. L’app, denominata CHIt (Cultural Heritage of Italy), è stata sviluppata secondo il framework Muruca, costruito con un’architettura a tre strati: back end, middleware e front end. All’app è stato collegato il software di visualizzazione EVT per la fruizione di file XML e abbinato l’uso di Pundit, un’estensione browser per l’annotazione dei testi. CHIt è popolata da risorse relative al patrimonio culturale italiano già disponibili in rete ma disseminate su più siti e quindi disomogenee. Lo scopo è quindi permettere agli utenti di avere un accesso semplificato a questi oggetti digitali, riunendoli in un’unica piattaforma e rendendoli omogenei e interoperabili grazie alla formattazione dei metadati secondo standard riconosciuti a livello internazionale (per es. DCMI e CIDOC). Inoltre, la semplicità dell’interfaccia la rende adatta a svariate tipologie di utenti che possono usare CHIt in vari modi, a seconda delle loro esigenze. Le risorse provengono da piattaforme che hanno differenti scopi e si inseriscono in contesti diversi, pertanto anche le modalità di reperimento delle risorse sono state differenti. L’obiettivo principale è stato il riuso, e per restare in linea con questo principio le risorse sono recuperate tramite API o SPARQL query. Tuttavia, alcuni metadati sono stati inseriti manualmente nel back end.
