The project focuses on the study of animal remains from archaeological sites located in the Venetian Lagoon and in the nearby mainland, and dated to the Late Antiquity, Early and Late Middle Ages. New faunal samples were examined through traditional archaeozoological investigations, focusing on frequency of species, culling preferences, and carcass processing strategies; in addition, osteometric analysis were carried out on the remains of the main domestic mammals and wild animals, with a focus on aquatic animals (anatids and molluscs). The study of the remains of domestic animals allowed to reconstruct food production strategies, and the nature and extent of supplies from the mainland, while the remains of aquatic birds and molluscs have highlighted the interaction between man and the peculiar lagoon environment. The work adopts an integrated approach that combines the analysis of domestic and wild fauna, terrestrial and aquatic, the revision of published data from the region and wider-scale comparisons. The research results highlight the nature of and degree of specialization in the exploitation of animal resources in this territory, identifying elements of continuity and discontinuity at synchronous and diachronic levels. The contextualization of such results allows to better understand the relationship between humans, animals and the environment and, ultimately, contributes to the reconstruction of historical dynamics.
