This article investigates the notation of sibilants in the Etruscan alphabet and in the North Etruscan alphabets used for Cisalpine Celtic and Venetic, considering both graphic and phonetic–phonological aspects. Particular attention is paid to the most problematic issues: in the Etruscan tradition, the occurrence in northern inscriptions of a notation system following the southern norm (‹s› [s], ‹ś› [ʃ]) and the use of the digraphs ‹sh› and ‹śh›; in the so-called Lepontic tradition, the values and rules governing the use of ‹ś› and ‹z› in attestations from different diachronic stages; and in the Venetic tradition, the various forms of the letter ‹ś› and the determination of its phonetic value.

Abstract
This article investigates the notation of sibilants in the Etruscan alphabet and in the North Etruscan alphabets used for Cisalpine Celtic and Venetic, considering both graphic and phonetic–phonological aspects. Particular attention is paid to the most problematic issues: in the Etruscan tradition, the occurrence in northern inscriptions of a notation system following the southern norm (‹s› [s], ‹ś› [ʃ]) and the use of the digraphs ‹sh› and ‹śh›; in the so-called Lepontic tradition, the values and rules governing the use of ‹ś› and ‹z› in attestations from different diachronic stages; and in the Venetic tradition, the various forms of the letter ‹ś› and the determination of its phonetic value.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
