Language rights are largely defined by international law. They can refer to individual and collective rights and take the form of non-interference or active support by the state. Through language rights, minorities seek to be granted the maintenance of their culture and language, receiving state-provided services and information in their own language, including education and legal proceedings. This chapter recapitulates the developments of language rights before and after 1945 and discusses controversies and difficulties in their application.
