The essay presents a new analysis of the Marcian manuscript gr. The study updates the codicological description, identifies more scribal hands than those listed by Mioni, and confirms the dating through the examination of watermarks. Special attention is devoted to the three De azymis treatises, attributed to John VIII of Jerusalem but now recognized as works of Eustratios of Nicaea, and to their role in defining the Eucharistic symbolism of leavened bread as a sign of Christ’s full humanity and divinity. The contribution shows how the debate over unleavened bread, from a ritual dispute, evolved into a dogmatic and identity issue crucial to understanding the growing division between the Eastern and Western Churches.

Abstract

The essay presents a new analysis of the Marcian manuscript gr. Z. 154, a fourteenth-century anti-Latin miscellany once owned by Cardinal Bessarion, which gathers texts on the procession of the Holy Spirit and on the controversy over unleavened bread.
