The linguistic interpretations of ancient lexica and scholia, even when they run counter to our own, provide useful information on both the ancients’ linguistic methodology and how linguistic analysis can sometimes get sidetracked (today as much as in antiquity). This paper explores these issues in a self-defined corpus of ancient linguistic thought: the precepts of Atticist lexicography, as exemplified by Phrynichus Atticista. The first part of the paper briefly considers Phrynichus’ approach to linguistic innovation. The analysis then turns to consider the Atticist debate on the polysemy of the word λάσανα. By focusing on different lexicographical entries from Phrynichus’ lexica the paper shows the range of attitudes to linguistic innovation and semantic evolution which characterise the lexicographer’s approach to post-Classical Greek.
