When acquiring a new language, learners are influenced not only by its internal structural features but also by sociolinguistic variables. Understanding these effects helps instructors tailor their teaching methods. Based on a survey of 90 Taiwanese students’ acquisition of Vietnamese, this study examines how four sociolinguistic factors—(i) learning environment, (ii) age, (iii) length of Vietnamese study, and (iv) existing proficiency level—affect their learning outcomes. The findings offer valuable insights for teaching Vietnamese to Taiwanese learners and to foreign learners more broadly.

Abstract

When acquiring a new language, learners are influenced not only by its internal structural features but also by sociolinguistic variables. Understanding these effects helps instructors tailor their teaching methods. Based on a survey of 90 Taiwanese students’ acquisition of Vietnamese, this study examines how four sociolinguistic factors—(i) learning environment, (ii) age, (iii) length of Vietnamese study, and (iv) existing proficiency level—affect their learning outcomes. The findings offer valuable insights for teaching Vietnamese to Taiwanese learners and to foreign learners more broadly.
