Numeral classifier languages are commonly assumed to have no articles, therefore it is of interest to see how these languages express definiteness. This paper describes several strategies that Vietnamese uses to denote definiteness. The key empirical issue under question is that it is well reported that bare N, CLF-N, Numeral-CLF-N, PL-CLF-N, cái-CLF-N can all be definite in Vietnamese (Trinh 2011, Phan and Lander 2015, Simpson and Ngo 2018, Bisang and Quang 2020). This research aims to address the two following questions: (i) Are there articles in Vietnamese? (ii) Are there any differences in terms of definiteness interpretation between different nominal constructions in Vietnamese?

Abstract
(ii) Are there any differences in terms of definiteness interpretation between different nominal constructions in Vietnamese?| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
