The chapter aims to investigate philosophically whether it is possible to get used to crisis experiences, which by definition should be episodic, like natural catastrophes, and therefore of a nature opposite to what is intended to be defined by “habit”, which is built on reiteration. Using case studies taken from the history of science, the multidimensionality of catastrophes is presented since the modern age. Then it is under discussion whether the environmental changes we are experiencing nowadays are a catastrophe and, if it is the case, to what extent. Finally, this excursus tries to find an answer to the initial question: if in certain areas you can live with the risk of natural disasters by adopting “good habits”, will it be possible to face the risks resulting from climate change with new habits?

Abstract
The chapter aims to investigate philosophically whether it is possible to get used to crisis experiences, which by definition should be episodic, like natural catastrophes, and therefore of a nature opposite to what is intended to be defined by “habit”, which is built on reiteration. Using case studies taken from the history of science, the multidimensionality of catastrophes is presented since the modern age. Then it is under discussion whether the environmental changes we are experiencing nowadays are a catastrophe and, if it is the case, to what extent. Finally, this excursus tries to find an answer to the initial question: if in certain areas you can live with the risk of natural disasters by adopting “good habits”, will it be possible to face the risks resulting from climate change with new habits?File | Dimensione | Formato | |
