LA CONVENZIONE DI ISTANBUL E IL DIRITTO DELL’UNIONE EUROPEA IN MATERIA DI VIOLENZA DOMESTICA E INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE

The objective of this chapter is to present the existing international and regional legal instruments for preventing and combating domestic violence, mainly with reference to the Council of Europe Istanbul Convention. The contribution will provide further insights into the development of preventing and combating domestic violence at European Union level, following the accession of the latter to the Istanbul Convention on 1 June 2023, and the adoption of the Directive on Combating and Preventing Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, approved by the European Parliament on 24 April 2024 and published in the Official Journal on 14 May 2024. The analysis will focus on the legal bases of these legislative developments and on the impact of accession on EU Member States, including those that have not yet ratified the Istanbul Convention.
