The constructions una vez (esp.) and una volta (it.) ‘once’, which have equivalents in contemporary Romance languages, have different meanings depending on the syntactic context in which they are found: that expressed by the frequency adjunct ‘una vez1’, that of the temporal adjunct ‘una vez2’, and that of the subordinating connectors ‘una vez3 (que)’ and ‘una vez4’. The comparative analysis of these forms, which appear successively in the evolutionary trajectory of both Spanish and Italian, allows us to argue that they are all related to each other through processes of grammaticalization that are studied in detail in this paper.

Abstract
The constructions una vez (esp.) and una volta (it.) ‘once’, which have equivalents in contemporary Romance languages, have different meanings depending on the syntactic context in which they are found: that expressed by the frequency adjunct ‘una vez1’, that of the temporal adjunct ‘una vez2’, and that of the subordinating connectors ‘una vez3 (que)’ and ‘una vez4’. The comparative analysis of these forms, which appear successively in the evolutionary trajectory of both Spanish and Italian, allows us to argue that they are all related to each other through processes of grammaticalization that are studied in detail in this paper.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
