This paper focuses on the indefinite interpretation of clitic lo in Italian. We depart from Leonetti’s (2019) proposal to treat this phenomenon as a case of weak definiteness, building on a previous analysis of indefinite ne in Catalan and Italian, which splits indefiniteness among property of individuals, property of kinds and predicate meaning. We show that Italian indefinite lo, can both denote a property of individuals and a property of kinds. Furthermore, uninflected lo can be a predicate anaphora. Comparison with Catalan helps us distinguish between these semantic meanings on the one hand and weak definiteness on the other hand.

Abstract
This paper focuses on the indefinite interpretation of clitic lo in Italian. We depart from Leonetti’s (2019) proposal to treat this phenomenon as a case of weak definiteness, building on a previous analysis of indefinite ne in Catalan and Italian, which splits indefiniteness among property of individuals, property of kinds and predicate meaning. We show that Italian indefinite lo, can both denote a property of individuals and a property of kinds. Furthermore, uninflected lo can be a predicate anaphora. Comparison with Catalan helps us distinguish between these semantic meanings on the one hand and weak definiteness on the other hand.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
