El Hors / El Has short texts appeared in major journals from 1908 onwards, often on the same page as those by Gottfried Benn, Robert Musil, Robert Walser, Rilke, Max Brod or Kafka. She was praised as a “genius of the sketch”, above all because she was able to sketch the cruel abysses of erotic entanglements from a female perspective without moralizing with just a few strokes. In the early 1990s, around a quarter of her work was republished, namely the small books Die Schaukel and Schatten, which were published in 1913 and 1920. However, the author's unusual, anything but harmless oeuvre is more diverse and far more extensive than previously assumed. In addition to the well-known sketches, the volume presented here brings together more than 150 texts that have never been reprinted and in many cases have not even been bibliographically recorded, collects biographical evidence, including letters, as well as contemporary reviews, and makes the work and the author accessible with an afterword.
