What responsibility do scholars in social science have towards their communities? Discourse analysts were faster than sociolinguists in dealing with these issues, even if their books are not necessarily read by the layperson. Critical sociolinguistics is concerned with inequality. It starts from the standpoint that members of different communities do not have access to resources in the same way.
