Based on unpublished documents and the reinterpretation of known sources, the essay reconstructs the role of the architect from Modena Giuseppe Maria Soli in the intricate affairs of the Royal Palace in Venice. Particularly investigated are Soli's relationships with Luigi Canonica and Giovanni Antolini and the reasons that led to Antolini's removal from the building site. The rich dossier of Soli's drawings preserved at the Academy of Sciences in Modena allows for the analysis of Soli's design intentions and their comparison with what was actually realized during the Napoleonic period.
