The article examines the consequences of the diffusion of energy crops such as maize on the economic and work situation of farmers settled close to or inside forested areas in Northern Thailand (2000-2013). Instead of a direct land (forest) grabbing for energy crops, the land is illegally appropriated by atomized farmers encompassefìd in the regime of contract farming, who seek to satisfy the increasing demand for biomasses intended to the widening market of biofuels, increasing their dependence on unpredictable fluctuaiton of oil prices.
