The essay addresses a central issue: Who is responsible for the task of taking care of archival collections and of making them accessible when there is a proven cultural value, and therefore they are common good, even though their actual ownership is not yet public but private? Since these collections in particular bear witness to the ideas, practices and languages of 20th century art history, and often have a dual significance as historical and artistic documents, state museums, as well as archives, are primarily called into question. And yet the issue concerns both the survival of collections and the life of archives in general, as well as―through the indispensable action of acquiring contemporary works―new collections. It requires, moreover, an effective synergy between public and private.

Abstract
The essay addresses a central issue: Who is responsible for the task of taking care of archival collections and of making them accessible when there is a proven cultural value, and therefore they are common good, even though their actual ownership is not yet public but private? Since these collections in particular bear witness to the ideas, practices and languages of 20th century art history, and often have a dual significance as historical and artistic documents, state museums, as well as archives, are primarily called into question. And yet the issue concerns both the survival of collections and the life of archives in general, as well as―through the indispensable action of acquiring contemporary works―new collections. It requires, moreover, an effective synergy between public and private.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
