Apocalisse

The ambiguity of the referent of the apocalyptic discourse in constituting either a prophetic vision of the historical future of the end times, condensed in the figure of the Edenic restitution of the Millennium (Rev 20:1-6), or, rather, the revelation of a doctrine or of the alter mundus that comes after the end of history and, in filigree, in the spiritual plot of the present and of the temporal dimension of the civitas Dei, well summarizes the destiny of the Wirkungsgeschichte of that text which, even if retrospectively with regard to the writings of biblical and apocryphal literature, will act as an archetype for the entire genre: the Apocalypse of St. John.
