The Sense of Possibility

In the history of Western culture, possibility seems like a lateral and secondary space, a thick and intricate forest, on the edges of the straight roads of necessity and the vast grassy expanses of reality. Possibility drags us along a path that opens onto fluid, changing and tumultuous panoramas, boundless horizons in which things, suddenly, no longer appear for what they are and we ourselves are surprised to become different, slipping from something else to something else, caught in the vortex of a disorienting vertigo. And yet, if reality confirms itself as the dimension characterized by an evidence of truth that imposes itself against what is false or, you may also like, as the blunt consistency of objectivity that hinders what is purely subjective and, finally, as the affirmative fullness of the positive that excludes the negative, possibility manifests itself, instead, as the proper and all-encompassing modality of meaning.

Nella storia della cultura occidentale la possibilità sembra uno spazio laterale e secondario, una folta e intricata foresta, ai margini delle strade rettilinee della necessità e delle vaste distese erbose della realtà. La possibilità trascina per un cammino che si dischiude su panorami fluidi, cangianti e tumultuosi, orizzonti sconfinati in cui le cose, all’improvviso, non appaiono più per quello che sono e noi stessi ci sorprendiamo a diventare diversi, scivolando di altro in altro, presi nel vortice di una spaesante vertigine. Eppure, se la realtà si conferma come la dimensione connotata da un’evidenza di verità che si impone di contro a ciò che è falso o, vuoi anche, come la consistenza contundente dell’oggettività che ostacola ciò che è puramente soggettivo e, infine, quale pienezza affermativa del positivo che esclude il negativo, la possibilità si manifesta, invece, come la modalità, propria e onnicomprensiva, del senso.
