Los derivados de UBI y UNDE en español

The locative adverbs, stemming from latin ubi and unde, show an intense process of variation and change in the history of the Spanish language and played a significant role in the formation of the modern standard. Despite its relevance, few research has been done about the causes and development of the changes involved and most of the studies has mainly paid attention to internal factors. The chrono-geographical distribution of the main variants (ó, onde, do, donde) of the locative adverbs is of an exceptional heuristic value to advance and explore new hypothesis about this linguistic change. This distribution suggests that modern donde was coined as the result of dialect contact occurred in the center of Iberian Peninsula at the end of the Middle Age.
