The Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT, Tunisian General Labour Union) is widely recognized as the most important formally organized collective actor in Tunisia’s 2011 uprising, which led to the downfall of Ben Ali’s authoritarian regime and the democratization of the country. This article focuses on the role played by the labour federation in this process, arguing that the mobilizations of non-unionized (and often unwaged) precarious workers were key in pressuring the union to support the insurrection.

Abstract

The Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT, Tunisian General Labour Union) is widely recognized as the most important formally organized collective actor in Tunisia’s 2011 uprising, which led to the downfall of Ben Ali’s authoritarian regime and the democratization of the country. This article focuses on the role played by the labour federation in this process, arguing that the mobilizations of non-unionized (and often unwaged) precarious workers were key in pressuring the union to support the insurrection.
