This paper places select magical gems from Mastrocinque’s Sylloge gemmarum gnosticarum (2003) into conversation with some of the research surrounding René Magritte’s painting, La trahison des images (1926). I contend that the kinds of questions raised by Magritte’s painting and contiguous scholarship offer a useful hermeneutical lens through which we might observe more subtle aspects of the ritual poetics of gems and related magical objects within and across the domains of words, images, and materials.

Abstract

This paper places select magical gems from Mastrocinque’s Sylloge gemmarum gnosticarum (2003) into conversation with some of the research surrounding René Magritte’s painting, La trahison des images (1926). I contend that the kinds of questions raised by Magritte’s painting and contiguous scholarship offer a useful hermeneutical lens through which we might observe more subtle aspects of the ritual poetics of gems and related magical objects within and across the domains of words, images, and materials.
