The essay aims to illustrate the state of knowledge concerning the phenomenon of reused sculpture in Venice in the Middle Ages considering the most recent scientific bibliography, setting it within the broader framework of international research concerning the spolia studies. Introduced by methodological remarks on the need to consider the Venetian area as a regional case study, the article investigates documentary sources and archaeological evidence in Venice and its lagoon in the early and late Middle Ages, focusing especially on the Marciana area and on the evidence of capitals from the ancient Roman and early Byzantine ages and their medieval imitations reused in Venetian public and private architecture.
