The article rilfects on the situation in Cuba during the 2020 pandemic. It discusses the impact of social isolation and quarantine on daily life, in which the precariousness already brought about by the blockade is further exacerbated by the closure of borders and the halting of international trade. In Havana, the candles become precious for the spirits and orishas in home altars and for the moment of apagón, the accidental or state-scheduled blackouts to save energy, a particularly hot topic during the quarantine. Despite the excellence of the Cuban medical system, the condition of the bloqueo, in the midst of a pandemic introduced in Cuba to mostly by holidaymakers, means a climate of heightened uncertainty dictated by a shortage of economic resources, particularly medicines, medical equipment and foodstuffs.
