The central interest of the contributions collected in this volume is to focus on the variety, diversity and complexity of the manifold and intertwined traditions of European drama in the early modern period. The majority of printed or manuscript dramas from the early modern period have yet to be discovered by researchers. Of many other dramas, we only know that they once existed through playbills or other indirect evidence. The prevailing historiographical patterns of interpretation in research and teaching, which have been established based on a narrow canon that is mostly narrowed from a national perspective, must be regarded as correspondingly provisional. However, the numerous online repositories that have been created over the last two decades have made access to the surviving corpus of texts eminently easier and even supposedly peripheral traditions of transmission, such as those of Portuguese drama or translations into Russian, have suddenly become visible, even if not usually in text-critical editions.
