‘Meetings with naqshbandī jahrī Dervishes in the Ferghana Valley (Uzbekistan)’ is centred on meetings with some dervishes based mainly in Andijan and in the Ferghana valley that should be defined as naqshbandī jahrī because they used indifferently methods of the khafī (silent, inner) and of the jahrī (loud, manifest) school. To understand this peculiarity, one must take into account the fact that in Central Asia the way of performing the zikr connoted, distinguished and sometimes opposed two schools, significantly called khāfîyya and jahrīyya, each of which included, in addition to their specific zikr, a series of practices that are here isolated, transcribed and analysed on the basis of information gathered during a fieldwork carried out according to the methods of Ethnomusicology. From these pages emerges a rather rare raqs-i samā‘ together with the particular role of the hāfız, between oral poet of the Sufi repertories, singer and healer.
