The essay sets out to provide a sample analysis of three case studies concerning modern metrical inscriptions (carmina Latina epigraphica) from Venetia designed after illustrious Latin models – some well-established (e.g. Propertius, Ovid’s Amores), others unexpected (e.g. Ovid’s Ibis, Ps.-Lactantius’ De ave Phoenice) – with significant medieval and Renaissance parallels. In each case study, the issue of authorship is addressed (in sequence: Girolamo Bologni, Cyriacus of Ancona, Felice Feliciano), and some fresh considerations on the context of production are offered – foreshadowing the potential embedded in a large-scale investigation over this documentary category.

Abstract
The essay sets out to provide a sample analysis of three case studies concerning modern metrical inscriptions (carmina Latina epigraphica) from Venetia designed after illustrious Latin models – some well-established (e.g. Propertius, Ovid’s Amores), others unexpected (e.g. Ovid’s Ibis, Ps.-Lactantius’ De ave Phoenice) – with significant medieval and Renaissance parallels. In each case study, the issue of authorship is addressed (in sequence: Girolamo Bologni, Cyriacus of Ancona, Felice Feliciano), and some fresh considerations on the context of production are offered – foreshadowing the potential embedded in a large-scale investigation over this documentary category.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
